A Step Closer to a State-of-the-Art Youngsville Hospital
Franklin Regional Medical Center is working with Rex Healthcare on plans to build a co-managed hospital in Youngsville. The hospital is currently located in nearby Louisburg. The plans would be for a state-of-the-art facility in Youngsville on U.S. 1 just north of N.C. 96, only 10 minutes from Hidden Lake. An emergency care facility would replace the hospital in Louisburg. The involvement of Rex Healthcare, a renowned name in the market, is sure to attract top-notch physicians and enhance health care for Franklin County.

Enviornmental Study to Enhance Overall Health of the Lake

The community of Hidden Lake is situated around a 75-acre, spring-fed lake, which not only provides a beautiful setting for residents, but also a truly unique opportunity for environmental research. With the property’s diverse collection of native plants and abundance of fish, Hidden Lake is one of the only places in the Triangle such research can be conducted.

Last month, a comprehensive study and evaluation was completed on the lake environment at Hidden Lake. Sarah Anderson of Audubon International worked with Dr. Jim Rice, a professor of zoology and extension fisheries specialist at N.C. State University.

Joining the team were Dr. Rob Richardson, an extension aquatic plant specialist from N.C. State, and a team of graduate and undergraduate members of the Student Fisheries Society at the university.

The goal of the two-day study was to assess the general fish population in the lake and identify the plant species that inhabit the lake. The results are still being tabulated, but the findings will help us determine the best course of action for maintaining the overall health of the lake.

“This two-day study was very valuable,” said Sarah Anderson. “The team from N.C. State had extensive knowledge. The information gathered will help us protect and enhance the fish habitat, native plant population, aesthetics and recreational opportunities for residents at Hidden Lake – all with the best possible scientific research behind us.”

Record Funds Raised for LLS at
Hidden Lake
The 2007 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Showcase for a Cure home was the most successful to date. More than $325,000 was raised for the Eastern N.C. chapter of the Society through vendor donations, ticket sales, and silent and live auctions.

This year’s event easily surpassed the previous record of $300,000 raised in 2004. Bost Construction Company, which also built the home in 2004, built this year’s unique lakeside Tuscan villa that received a Gold Award during
Parade of Homes.

This year was the first time the Showcase home incorporated green-building techniques. Equipped with a permanent concrete roof, energy-efficient HVAC equipment, and low-emissive windows and doors, the home’s specifications far exceed the National Energy Star® standards. Recycled and renewable resources were used in construction, and the home harvests rain for irrigation.
